About the Community Safe Room (Storm Shelter) Project

On July 23rd, 2021, the City of Springfield was awarded $651,391.03 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) towards the construction of a community safe room.

On June 14th, 2022, the City of Springfield was awarded $293,355 from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Recreation Grant towards the complex's construction of the shower/restroom facilities to enable the expansion of the Rothenburg Campground. State Statute requires the City to provide additional restroom/shower facilities in immediate proximity to the Campground in order to expand with 9 new pull-through sites.

On November 7th, 2022, the City of Springfield was awarded an additional $1,038,448 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) towards the construction of the proposed community softball complex and storm shelter.

On November 15th, 2022, the City of Springfield accepted the low bid from Salonek Construction Inc. in the amount of $2,347,000.

The proposed project mitigates future flood damages to the complex and potential loss of life from severe weather.

Community support is needed to raise $160,000 in order to complete the project. and the Springfield Area Softball Association is leading the fundraising campaign. Every contribution will help make this safe room a reality and we thank all donors for their generosity. As of April 2023, the Softball Association has raised $149,750.

On April 12th, 2023, the city began project construction:

  • April 2023 - Demolition of 1970's softball complex building
  • April/May 2023 - Mass Excavation
  • May/June 2023 - Footings Established 
  • July/August 2023 - Masonry foundations
  • September 2023 - Enclosed Structure
  • January 15th, 2024 - Substantial Completion
  • March 31st, 2024 - Final Completion
