Public Utilities Commission New Advanced Meter Infrastructure

The Springfield Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has begun upgrading electric meters throughout the community.

Over the coming months, every electric meter in Springfield will be replaced with a new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters. These modern electric meters will provide the PUC with more detailed information about the electric system, helping improve reliability, respond to outages more efficiently, and better manage our electric distribution system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my electric meter being replaced?

The Springfield Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is upgrading all electric meters to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters. This project will modernize the electric system and improve the reliability and efficiency of utility operations.

What are the benefits of the new meters?

The new meters will:

  • Improve the PUC's ability to monitor and manage the electric distribution system.
  • Help identify outages and service issues more quickly.
  • Reduce the need for manual meter readings.
  • Provide more detailed usage information.
  • Support future customer access to near real-time electric usage data.

When will my meter be replaced?

Meter replacements have already begun and will continue until all electric meters have been upgraded.

Will my power be shut off?

Yes. Your electric service will be interrupted briefly while the old meter is removed and the new meter is installed. Most installations take only a few minutes.

Do I need to be home?

In most cases, no. If your electric meter is located outside, crews can complete the replacement without anyone being home. If the meter is located inside your home or another secured area, the PUC will contact you if access is needed.

Will I be able to see my electric usage?

The new meters have the capability to provide customers with near real-time usage information. The PUC is working toward making this feature available in the future and will provide additional information once it is ready.

Who will be replacing my meter?

All electric meter replacements will be completed by Springfield Public Utility Commission staff.

Do I need to schedule an appointment?

In most cases, no appointment is necessary if your meter is accessible. If your meter is located inside your home or another secured area, City staff will contact you to arrange access if needed.

What if I have questions?
